Program notes:

The music of Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1742) was used for this "First Sight" proposal concerning a band performance. These are some thematic elements, those that describe the well-known SPRING of the Concerts op. 8 called "The Four Seasons" (1725).
It is an arrangement for Concert Band where Vivaldi's music is outlined in an original way and with appropriate melodic and rhythmic variations, using suitable harmonic supports and modern rhythmic accompaniments. All this was designed to allow all instrumental sections to participate in the reading and interpretation of this lively musical page.
There is no shortage of completely extra thematic interventions to formulate a varied and pleasant performance, in essence it is a reading that serves to highlight the technical-executive skills of the band instrumental ensemble: in fact, fast passages in joint motion can be found, with various articulations , imitative and syncopated moments, with some ascending and descending chromatic movements.

The percussion, both those defined on the keyboard and indefinite, help to accompany the thematic passages, a guide and an additional help to maintain the rhythmic accuracy of the first reading. To this end, it is important to emphasize the repetition of the refrains of each period, created to train the instrumentalist's glance, both in the resumption of passages and to compare and favor an ever better performance.

Of course, it is essential to respect (in addition to the accuracy of the notes) the dynamic part and that of the phrasing with the various articulations, in order to obtain the necessary balance to highlight the main phrases with the various timbral colors.
The latter must be appropriate and well balanced, that is, suitable for any thematic idea and their respective secondary accompaniments, both rhythmic and harmonic.
After this research and control (already necessary in the study at first sight) it is possible to perform the piece without respecting the refrains, even by changing the speed as desired, performing in a more fluent and natural way.

This "SPRING" thus becomes a musical entertainment, with reference to eighteenth-century and modern tastes, a sort of making music together where the search for listening becomes essential to achieve "at first sight" a respectable performance.
Vivaldi's music is not always easy to make, especially in this arrangement where it has been mixed with other thematic proposals that require good playing skills. This putting oneself to the test stimulates every instrumentalist, moreover with the confident and expert direction of the Master Director, the performance will offer a further opportunity to continue in the technical-musical improvement. In this regard we recommend a laboratory of study of the repertoire at "First Sight", with various musical genres and an appropriate interpretation.

These “First Sight” rehearsals are already included in some International Execution Competitions or Band Classification. They represent an interesting novelty because they require further attention and commitment from the participating bands.
These are positive aspects that involve in-depth didactic study aimed at preparing the skills of rapid reading and the consequent improvement of the technical-instrumental aspect.
To these objectives are added the commitment to study and the understanding with the Maestro Director aimed at raising the artistic quality and therefore at obtaining a convincing interpretative performance, already in the "First Sight".

Definitely an experience to try, with the hope of a good execution!
