Born in Kyoto. He started bassoon at the age of 16. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts in 1987. In the same year, he studied abroad at Detmold College of Music. In 1990, he graduated from the university with the highest grade. After working for the Rhine German Opera Orchestra ('89-) and the Gunma Symphony Orchestra ('93-), he became the principal of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 2000. He is also a professor at Tokyo College of Music and a lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts.
