CARLO PIROLA (Picarband)

Until 2011, he held the chair of Instrumentation for Band with address in Direction and Composition for Wind Orchestra at the “G. Verdi ”in Milan, where he started the Music Workshop with a Youth Band, a Brass Band and a Symphonic Band.
He served as assistant teacher at the Teatro alla Scala and taught at the Civic School of Music in Milan from 1980 to 1995.
He was the winner of numerous national and international competitions of original composition for band. Most of the works for wind and percussion organics are published by the following Italian publishing houses: Animando, Belati, Boario, Dicorato, Edipan, Eufonia, Mulph, Primo Tema, Santabarbara, Vidale, Wicky; from the Dutch editions De Haske and Bronsheim, Emil Ruh and Mitropa (Switzerland), P. Lafitan (France), GTE Musica (Alicante-Spain), OrchestralART (Austria), BAM Music International (Geneva-Milan).

Carlo Pirola's curriculum and band production appear in three dictionaries: “Italian music for bands and wind groups” vol. II by Marino Anesa, the “Neue Lexikon Blasmusikwesens” by W. Suppan - ediz. Schulz-Freiburg (Germany) and “The Heritage Encyclopedia of Band Music” by W.H. Rehrig - Integrity Press - Ohio (USA).
Carlo Pirola's music also appears under the pseudonym Picarband and is performed in Europe, Asia, America and Australia.

In 1974 he founded and directed the amateur group of Consonanza Musicale of Lissone (Monza Brianza). From 2007 to 2013 he participated in international specialization courses in Spilimbergo (UD) directing youth bands in the performance of didactic pieces specially commissioned and composed for these formations. In 2015 and 2016 he directed and composed songs for the young people of the ANBIMA Interprovincial Band of Novara and Vercelli. He recently attended various listening and evaluation commissions, on the occasion of the Trentino Bands Festival organized by the Federation of Band Bodies of the province of Trento

He has attended the juries of various provincial, regional, national and international classification competitions (Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, England, Korea, Greece) and has held refresher courses for Master Conductors of Banda in various Italian regions, with the ANBIMA (National Association of Italian Bands) of Umbria, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Piedmont.

From 1999 to 2008 he was part, together with Marco Bazzoli, of the Artistic Direction of the International Band Competition "Flicorno d’oro" in Riva del Garda and until 2018 he gave lessons in composition, analysis and instrumentation to the student directors of the I.S.E.B. (European Higher Band Institute) in the province of Trento, with the artistic and didactic collaboration of Jan Cober, Jose Pasqual Vilaplana, Alex Schillings, Laszlo Marosi, Andrea Loss.

In 2017 he received the "Angelo d’oro" civic merit from the municipal administration of Lissone (Monza-Brianza) for his activity in the musical and cultural fields.
