Commissioned by the “InCrescenDO” Youth Wind Orchestra and its conductor Fabio Porte for the 2025 “Ciudad de Valencia” International Band Competition
“Fading Forest” is not as much a heartfelt musical protest against deforestation as a symbolic acknowledgement of reality that raises questions about the future. The ever more pressing rhythm of the music represents the ever-faster pace of deforestation, and the meter steadily shrinks as our forest grows smaller and smaller with each musical measure.
The piece is made up of three parts:
- the first one is characterized by a kind of rhythmic stillness upon which the “forest theme” is slowly woven into the musical discourse;
- the second part displays a more hectic style in which the rhythmic groove leads to a climatic breaking point;
- the third part is an elegy to a once lush forest that is no longer quite so.
The whole piece is based on the “forest theme” which is heard sometimes in a fragmented way and others in variations:
Less evident is the “uncertainty motif”, which is developed in the following transpositions:
(Luca Pettinato)
