“Inheritance (Chuan Cheng)” is a commissioned work by Tzu-chieh Shen, saxophonist of Taiwan. The piece expresses a concept that things born and passed down eventually take root and become culture and tradition.
The melody begins with the notes Do, Re, Mi ? in an extremely simple manner. It depicts the very beginning of the creation of things. The melody gradually expands and resonates, and then the follower appears. The middle section describes the difficult period many cultures experienced. Beyond that, however, the golden era might come. The final section portrays a solidified culture with two voices in closer relationship than in the first section, with echoes at shorter intervals and third harmonies.
