Program notes:
Composed in 2025 as the theme for the clarinet quartet "Las Canas." The title is Spanish for "Cuatro" (four) and "Cana" (reed), and since the clarinet uses a reed made from cane, a type of reed, the subtitle is "Four Reeds." This piece is based on the "Cha-cha-cha" rhythm, so it would be even more enjoyable to play with percussion.
It premiered at a Las Canas live performance in July 2025.
For publication, the piece was adapted for saxophone quartet, an ensemble using the same reed instrument.
