Program notes:
With this piece I wanted to approach the elements of the sonata form in reverse order: in a sonata you usually start by presenting a theme and developing it later but in this case, the sonata starts with already developed material and you get to hear the original theme only at the end of the first movement. The piece begins with a cadenza (which is usually played near the ending of a sonata) and the melodic material gets gradually simplified until it reaches the final part (Lento) which is meant to be played in a very simple and almost neutral sound. The second movement (Vivo) is in Rondo form and it’s based on different time signatures modulations that dictate not only rhythmic variations but different phrasings too.
