About the work
The folk song "Itsuki no Komori Uta" (Lullaby of Itsuki), which has been passed down from generation to generation in Kumamoto Prefecture, was sung by still small daughters who were sent to serve as babysitters, lamenting their own lives while nursing the babies on their backs.
In 2016, I arranged it for trumpet and piano when I created a charity CD for the Kumamoto earthquake.
The song expresses the hope that we will always have sorrow, but also hope and kindness.
I would be happy if people of all ages could play this Kumamoto folk song, which has been sung from generation to generation.
About playing
The beginning is a melancholy and angry image, followed by a rhythmic jazz-like phrase.
In the modulation section, I tried to express "light" and "wish," and although some fingerings and pitches are a bit difficult on the B-flat trumpet, please practice to play smoothly with slurs.
After the jazz-like reprise, there is a piano solo, which on the CD has a music box sound. Play the arpeggio notes so that each note stands out like a music box, and try to imagine the moment when the music box stops at the end.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Yasuko Sakai for her great help in notating the piano score and accompanying the reference recording.
