Today Golden Hearts Publications is pleased to announce the sale of a new wind band piece, "KA-EN (Summer Feast) , Rhapsody on the Tsurusaki-Odori” composed by Ken'ichi Masakado!
Details of the work is as follows.
Duration:8'40"
Publisher:Golden Hearts Publications(ONSA)
Composed in July 2010 as a commemorative piece for the 20th anniversary of the Tsurusaki Wind Band (Oita Prefecture), and premiered on August 29 of the same year with the composer himself conducting (revised in spring 2024; the revised version premiered on September 2, 2024, with Mr. Katsuya Sato conducting).
The motif of the piece is “Tsurusaki Odori” (Tsurusaki Dance), a nationally selected intangible folk cultural property, as requested by the orchestra.
The Tsurusaki Odori has two dances: the slow and graceful “Sarumarudayu” and the lively “Saemon”. Today, “Tsurusaki Odori” generally refers to “Sarumarudayu,” and the “Honba Tsurusaki Odori Festival” held every year on the Saturday and Sunday immediately following the Bon Festival in August focuses on “Sarumarudayu,” but “Saemon” has a longer history, dating back to 1560 (Eiroku 3).
KA-EN (Summer Feast) consists of two parts: Part 1, which focuses on the motifs and melodies of “Sarumarudayu,” and Part 2 (after M ), which focuses on those of “Saemon,” so that the music is not merely an arrangement or a description of a scene.
I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Yasushi Abe, president of the “Tsurusaki Dance Preservation Society” (https://turusakihozonkai.com/), for his great help in composing this piece.
(Ken'ichi Masakado)
