Program notes:

This piece was composed for my formation Saxoforte Dynamic Trio (Tommaso Miranda, Giorgia Grutta) in 2018. We had just received an invitation to perform together and we soon realized that the repertoire for Soprano, Baritone sax and piano is very limited, so I tried to make something new suited to our style.

With this trio I wanted to evoke the form and the style of the baroque “Vivaldian” concerto in which solo and tutti parts alternate. This is especially true for the first movement (Largo-Allegro ma non troppo) which follows the structure of any Vivaldi Concerto’s first movement: great care should be put in the performance to create an appropriate sound for the tutti and the soli. The second movement is some sort of Sarabanda without repetitions, while the third movement is more similar to a classical Rondo form. Another feature taken from the concerto form is the presence of Cadenzas in each of the movements (piano in the first movement, soprano in the second and baritone in the third): these are of course moments of absolute freedom and players are encouraged to find their own take on them or, even better, create their own cadenzas if possible.

After the first performance in 2018 this Trio has proved to be a very flexible and useful piece for concerts in trio formation not only for its length and relatively easy preparation but mostly for the fact that it can be played with other instruments like oboe, clarinet, bassoon or alto saxophone.
