I believe that this chain of events will continue without end, from person to person.\u003cbr\u003eThe title \"Tree of Eternity\" refers to the \"endless growth of the soul.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis work can be divided into two major parts.\u003cbr\u003eThe first half is about hardship and frustration, and the second half is about prayer and hope.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first half begins with a theme (Mesto) in the minor key for clarinet and piccolo, which appears at various points throughout the piece. Through the second theme played by the saxophones, the piece gradually grows and becomes an Allegretto. The second theme is played by the saxophones.\u003cbr\u003eIn the second half, the solo horn plays the first theme in the major key (Adagio pregando). Various instruments sing together and lead us to a prayer melody played by middle and bass instruments. The appellation as a \"2a Sinfonia\" was not appended until a cover was made for these scores after Ponchielli had left Cremona. According to the concert programs in Il Corriere Cremonese, it may never have been performed by Ponchielli, as he seems to have ended his activities as capobanda in early 1873. In fact, the 1874 performance would have been near the time of the very short career of Andrea Guarneri (1840-1899) as capobanda in Cremona. The dual Vicemaestri, Achille Bissocoli and Giuseppe Cesura, were the most likely persons to have directed it. The title page further identifies the site of the band's rehearsals and school as being located in the monastery associated with the Dominican church that held the tomb of Antonio Stradivari. Already, part of today's Piazza Roma, the church of St. Dominic had been destroyed and had become a site of band concerts.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn spite of the obvious sophistication of the scoring, the role of the editor remains considerable due to Ponchielli's free-wheeling approach to scoring. The opening in Bflat Minor returns briefly before the cadential rush at the end, minus a key signature change. The masterwork of this piece is its three-part fugal introduction (with countersubjects and real answers) followed by a type of thematic transformation throughout that relies solely upon the motifs presented in the fugal entry. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis motivic technique is not usually associated with Italian composers and predates Ponchielli's documented introduction to the music of Richard Wagner in 1876\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eInitially, I thought that many of Ponchielli's funeral marches exhibited a familiarity with Beethoven's music, particularly with regard to the substitution of the lowered submediant as an alternative to the dominant as a related key. When Ponchielli's band setting of Beethoven's Op. 26 funeral march was discovered, there was a sense of self-justification. While recent presentations (and a new article for the online Grove) by Professor Licia Sirch of the Milan Conservatory have revealed the pedagogical changes made at that institution in compositional exercises, a familiarity with both Bach and Beethoven as studio repertoire in the keyboard area remains undocumented.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAmong the entire Cremona band music production, the number of original works for band are very few if one removes the brass concertos, dances, and the marches.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBeyond the two sets of variations, only this work and the two Fantasias stand the test of originality. The problems associated with works intended originally for the wind band extends to today, for reasons that have more to do with the vagaries of human nature and the remaining secondary status of the wind band. Mozart, Mendelssohn, Richard Struass, and Wagner all composed works for only winds. Even in the band world such works are more likely to be honored by their absence from programs in spite of their being often cited in arguments for such a repertoire. This work carries with it also the demands of exceptional virtuosity that all but ensures its likelihood of being rarely performed.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eA further concern is that Ponchielli had developed over the course of ten years a technology for dealing with the realities of outdoor, unamplified music performances. As yet there is no contemporary report of the atmosphere at these concerts as regarding the number in the audience, the position of the band, whether an elevated stage was used (there are proposal plans in the archives), and many other considerations. Suffice it to say, The band of 1872 was Ponchielli's \"ideal,\" which he had been working toward since he arrived in Piacenza in August, 1860. The combination of a 12-14-member clarinet section with a group of 14-16 conical brass, 7 cylindrical brass, and 2-3 percussion provided a robust yet limited timbre palette for his work. They say that he had an influence not only to Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel who were also composers in France, but also western music, entirely. Because of his free style on compositions, and his suggestion on music (not only just appreciating as works of art), he is called a “maverick of music”, and he composed many works for the piano. “Je te veux” is one of his most famous works, like “Gymnopedies”. Originally, this work was composed as a chanson for Paulette Darty, who was called “La Reine des Valses lentes”, in 1990 (lyric was by Henry Pacory). Later, Satie released for a solo piano, by himself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis arrangement is on basis of a solo piano version. Respecting the “frame” of music by Satie, I integrated with Jazz style, everywhere, and aimed for an arrangement like show music. At that time, I imaged, “If Satie was influenced by Jazz…?”. He was a pianist and composer with a promising future, but died at the young age of 23.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Moon over the Ruined Castle (Kojo-no-Tsuki) was composed as a publicly solicited work for the ‘Junior High School Song Collection’ being compiled by the Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he was a student, and was published in 1901 together with two other pieces he had submitted at the same time.\u003cbr\u003eThe lyrics were written by Bansui Doi, and the song is an unaccompanied.\u003cbr\u003eThis song, which combines the style of Japanese poetry with a melody based on authentic Western music rather than the traditional Japanese musical style (pentatonic), is considered to be the first Western song composed in Japan and is historically important.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYamada Kosaku (9 June 1886 - 29 December 1965), who also worked to popularise Western music in Japan, arranged this song with piano accompaniment in 1917. Today, Yamada's arrangement is widely known.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are several differences between Taki's original and Yamada's version.　\u003cbr\u003eFirst, the tonality. The original is in B minor (this arrangement for band is in C minor), while Yamada's version is in D minor.\u003cbr\u003eSecondly, the note values and number of bars are expanded in Yamada's version. Both versions are in four-quarter time, and the speed specification is almost the same, which means that the Yamada’s version is sung more slowly than the original.\u003cbr\u003eThere are also other differences in the melody line, such as the presence or absence of sharp and the position of dotted note.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the first arrangement for band based on Taki's original. This arrangement would not have been possible without the enthusiasm of Mr Hiroshi Sakai, conductor and saxophone player of the Oita Prefectural Government Staff Band. Mr Sakai also came up with the idea of juxtaposing the two ‘The Moon over the Rough Castle’... I arranged the first half of the first chorus using the Yamada’s version, and the latter two to four choruses based on the Taki’s original. This repetition expresses the unwavering passion for music since the foundation of the orchestra. Entering the “development section,” the “Rosary Motive” moves freely in rhythm while maintaining the pitch relationship of each note, and eventually produces a beautiful melody.
