It sprouts when the vernal breeze blows. Pick the red beans with your hands filled. Your yearning for love will be fulfilled. ” This poem - written by a Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei (699-761 AD, China) - was the inspiration of this piece. The heart-shaped red beans are the seeds of Adenanthera pavonina, which is a tree growing in the southern part of China and South Asia. The poet extended the nostalgic thoughts on red beans to admiration and yearning for friends far away. Structured on the basis of fifth interval, the music proceeds with variations on the inversions. It is based on the counterpoint of the two voices but I wanted to focus more on the effects created by overlapping and crossing between the two voices (hands) and in the final part I’ve used the sostenuto pedal (middle pedal) to achieve a very special kind of resonance. While studying it to learn more about Vivaldi’s composing style I began to play it on my piano and so I started making my own arrangement, eventually I decided to write it down and this arrangement was born.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis is a work very much in the spirit of Bach’s transcriptions for solo keyboard of other Vivaldi or Corelli works, so it’s not exactly a mere reproduction of the original but an adaptation for the keyboard: I’ve added something here and there, mostly to make it more pianistic and more in my style. For every repetition I have also wrote down my own ornamentations and sometimes I’ve used the repetitions to create a different arrangement of the same material: these variations are only a suggestion and you can easily skip them if you just want to play your own ornamentations or just go to the next section.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFor the source material I’ve used the manuscript and Francesco Malipiero’s transcription of the work: I’ve decided not to include any symbols or articulations not present in the manuscript: what you find in the first part of each movement is very accurate to what Vivaldi wrote. He and Han\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eYu (768-824 AD) were the only two writers from the Tang Dynasty included in\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ethe Eight Elites of Tang-Song's Classical Proses. Liu Zong-Yuan held a\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eprominent position in the Imperial Government in Changan. But in 805 the\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003epolitical reform movement that he supported failed. He was demoted and exiled\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eto Yongzhou, Hunan. Later he was exiled further south and became the\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003egovernor of Liuzhou, Guangxi. “Snow on the River” was written when he was in\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eYongzhou.
