This emphasis on \"a stroke\" is the main theme of this piece. The inquisitiveness of the ancient Inca civilization was the motivation behind the music, written for saxophone quartet with marimba and drum set. The music begins with a swaying rhythm of the marimba to unveil the mysterious ancient city. Ushered in is the soprano saxophone singing the song of the ancient city. The rest of the voices are decorative, backing up the main melody. In the original version of the piece the soloists are accompained by strings and basso continuo. In my arrangement none of the parts were sacrificed.\u003cbr\u003eAs a professional saxophone player and teacher, I arranged it knowing very well Saxophone possibilities, paying attention to saxophone characteristics, from tonal characteristics of the saxophone family to the 'playability' of the work; so, while soloists parts are demanding and very challenging, ensemble's parts are not so difficult. However, this work may reflect the people who is seeing their “past”, quietly, and seeking for their “future”, and also their distresses and troubles. On the other hand, I was also looking for a new way, or, “future”, through those two “past”, “Oita Saigoku Junrei-Uta” and “Sakura”. In that sense, myself might be reflected on this work, and at the same time, composing this work may be my “Pilgrimage”.\u003cbr\u003e(From the Program Note at the first performance)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn summer of 2015, Hirohiko Tamura (an emeritus professor of Oita University) talked to me about sending my work to the group “Ibuki”, which is officiated over by him, so that my work would be performed in concert “Furusato Oita-no Hibiki”. The point of this concert is to show new arrangements of Oita folk songs and pieces which are related to Oita (Oita is one of prefectures in Japan). He kindly lent many data, and I looked for main piece. On this process, I was especially attracted by “Oita Saigoku Junrei-Uta”. This may be because I composed “Homage for Wind Band” in 2014. The stage of this work is Sasaguri Town in Fukuoka prefecture, which is well known by “The pilgrimage course of Sasaguri Shikoku 88 sacred places”. Nowadays, I don’t think many people sing this song. There was no sound source for reference, and there was only a transcription by a researcher. How should the song be performed? I made a large subject on myself.\u003cbr\u003eThe concert would be held in early spring. Therefore, I would have liked to put other element which we could feel the spring, too. Consequently, I chose “Sakura”, which is a popular folk song, as another main piece. And, on “Oita Saigoku Junrei-Uta” and “Sakura”, there is a common scale structure, “Miyakobushi Scale”. We had just received an invitation to perform together and we soon realized that the repertoire for Soprano, Baritone sax and piano is very limited, so I tried to make something new suited to our style. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith this trio I wanted to evoke the form and the style of the baroque “Vivaldian” concerto in which solo and tutti parts alternate. This is especially true for the first movement (Largo-Allegro ma non troppo) which follows the structure of any Vivaldi Concerto’s first movement: great care should be put in the performance to create an appropriate sound for the tutti and the soli. The second movement is some sort of Sarabanda without repetitions, while the third movement is more similar to a classical Rondo form. The music should sound playful in some parts but never aggressive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn every movement I've followed the typical character and structure of the dances but in each one of them I’ve tried to gradually break out from the usual time signature so you will find a lot of rhythmic ambiguity since many musical elements are shifted in time or overlapping bars. The white stone is like a lighthouse to guide the people's footsteps, so that the people will not get lost in the vast Central Mountain Range. The music uses the rhythm of percussion instruments and various flute articulations to create a hunting atmosphere, with hunting scenes such as waiting and chasing. Although I once tried to perform by a solo Vibraphone, it was not so good. I wanted Multi-layered sound by ensemble.\u003cbr\u003eIn Spring of 2021, Kanna Taniguchi discussed with me an encore for a concert in Kyoto, on 14th August. It should be performed by all members. At that time, I thought that now is the time to perform this work. I suggested my newly writing, and she agreed readily.
