The inquisitiveness of the ancient Inca civilization was the motivation behind the music, written for saxophone quartet with marimba and drum set. The music begins with a swaying rhythm of the marimba to unveil the mysterious ancient city. Ushered in is the soprano saxophone singing the song of the ancient city. The rest of the voices are decorative, backing up the main melody. We had just received an invitation to perform together and we soon realized that the repertoire for Soprano, Baritone sax and piano is very limited, so I tried to make something new suited to our style. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith this trio I wanted to evoke the form and the style of the baroque “Vivaldian” concerto in which solo and tutti parts alternate. This is especially true for the first movement (Largo-Allegro ma non troppo) which follows the structure of any Vivaldi Concerto’s first movement: great care should be put in the performance to create an appropriate sound for the tutti and the soli. The second movement is some sort of Sarabanda without repetitions, while the third movement is more similar to a classical Rondo form. The key of C Major is overall very calm and simple, in earlier versions of the score there were many indications for the viola to play “molto sul tasto” in order to blend better with the clarinet sound and I think this is still a good playing technique to use in this piece in order to get a better sound with the clarinet. The music should sound playful in some parts but never aggressive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn every movement I've followed the typical character and structure of the dances but in each one of them I’ve tried to gradually break out from the usual time signature so you will find a lot of rhythmic ambiguity since many musical elements are shifted in time or overlapping bars. By exploring the change, recombination and reconciliation of the timbre among the instruments, the tones in the paintings are thus elucidated. The different musical phrasings for the instruments create an auditory distance among the voices, which reflects the abstract distance among the various emotions from corresponding images. The rhythmic, harmonic and melodic variations epitomize the aesthetics of liveliness and tranquility in the paintings. The contrast between reality and illusion, between existence and disappearance, leads to emotional gaps and hurdles, which eventually submit to the simplistic nature of humanity. In the linear development of the music, the sound evolves to the original essence through various aesthetic phases of virtuality\/reality, wrapping\/unfolding, gathering\/scattering, distancing\/closing, and brightening\/darkening. The different textures of the sound transform, enhance, and diminish to show the hope for music's vitality and to express human's contemplation and inspiration of life. This piece consists of three sections: the birth of life, the course of life, and the sublimation of life. Using a style of minimalism, the music symbolizes love emerging from the mediocrity. The music mainly describes the Seediq people hunting in the Rdmax Tasing of the Central Mountain Range. The white stone is like a lighthouse to guide the people's footsteps, so that the people will not get lost in the vast Central Mountain Range. The music uses the rhythm of percussion instruments and various flute articulations to create a hunting atmosphere, with hunting scenes such as waiting and chasing.
