Omuta City Symphonic Band holds concerts at Muskegon as a cultural exchange mission in 2000.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn the premiere that day, it was a joint concert with a high school jazz band from Muskegon. I received a request from the OCSB and the \"Omuta-Muskegon Friendship Association\" to declare that opening and compose that express friendship between both cities (premiere was done by the OCSB alone).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEspecially it does not use materials that are related to both cities and it is not a depiction of something, but I am trying to reflect something like \"spirit\" of the two cities they have been interacting so far, and keep walking hand in hand for the future. Also, from the thought that this work becomes a \"bridge\" of exchange, I was making the structure of \"arch\" formula (almost on the theme) A-B-C-B-A. They started generations after generations, becoming the A-Mei Tribe today.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eChief Malago Fighting Giant Alika:\u003c\/b\u003e (measures 173-130): On the Mei-Lun mountains in Hua-Lieng, Chief Malago led the tribe warriors against the aggression of the giant, Alika. Combats after combats the giant was finally defeated. The tranquility and happiness of the tribe was restored.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eSong of Life:\u003c\/b\u003e (measures 131-158): The fireplace was where the family got together, lived, and educated their youngsters. It was the center of the family and the source of livelihood. At the gathering place the tribe members sat around the fireplace and sang, symbolizing the continuation and prosperity of life.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eHarvest Festival: \u003c\/b\u003e (measures 159-183): Praying for a good harvest in the coming year was done with singing and dancing. The more enthusiastic the celebration is, the more abundant the crops will be. Harvest Festival was the most important celebration for the agriculture based A-Mei Tribe. In 208 AD, warlord General Cao attempted to invade the Wu Kingdom, bringing his troops over 200,000 soldiers southbound. General Sun of the Wu Kingdom and General Liu combined their forces, fighting Cao with only 50,000 soldiers. The alliance positioned themselves on land and water, fighting with few against many, and converging at the decisive battle site of Red Cliffs. In the end, Cao was completely defeated at Wulin, resulting in the three-way division of the country. Hakka Eight Tones is an traditional musical art form of the Hakka people, commonly used for weddings, funerals, and other occasions. Therefore its musical styles, performance forms, contents, and instruments possess strong characteristics of the traditional Chinese folk music. This composition is based on the traditional folk music, but develops into an innovative exploration with the Western musical techniques. Hakka Eight Tones is closely tied to social rituals, from welcome of newborns, marriage, birthday celebration for the elderly, to funeral. The progression of rituals, the gratification for gifts, and the celebration with music represent deeply rooted cultural appearances and social relationships, symbolizing the emotions and yearnings for auspice, heritage and ancestry. Hakka Eight Tones is often performed as background music. Although its music is based on a simple rustic melody, the performers often have ample room for improvisation. Once combined with Western wind instrumentation, the music is significantly diversified in tone and enhanced in volume. More room is opened up for exploring musical forms, textures, and dynamics. For the composer, however, it is quite challenging to resolve issues pertaining to tuning, timbre, balance and coherence. The percussion instruments mimic a cymbal and drum parade, reflecting the liveliness and dynamics of the celebration. 2) Ceremony at Confucius Temple: A solemn atmosphere of the ceremony is developing under a stable beat with sustaining chords in the background. Wood wind and percussion instruments form staggered melody lines. 3) Fort Anping: With a motif from the folksong “Remembrance of Amping” hidden in the background, the history of the ancient fortress is revealed. As the timpani rumbles, other percussion instruments manifest a strong regular rhythm to describe historical battle scenes. 4) Renewed Impressions of an Old City: Through evolving harmonies and fast-playing phrases, all instruments contribute to a modern spirit of the old city, which combines traditions with innovations. The opening in Bflat Minor returns briefly before the cadential rush at the end, minus a key signature change. It is only from accidentals that one can deduce that five flats are required.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFurther, there are passages where there are more notes than players, leaving the final voicing up to rehearsals. In spite of all these concerns, Ponchielli obviously spent a great deal of time in preparing the materials for the final scoring.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe overall structure can be seen in the re-scored Sinfonia from his early student days in Milan and his own transcription of La Savoiarda, i.e., a slow introduction followed by a presentation of several themes in minor and then major, all wrapped up in a lively coda. The masterwork of this piece is its three-part fugal introduction (with countersubjects and real answers) followed by a type of thematic transformation throughout that relies solely upon the motifs presented in the fugal entry. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis motivic technique is not usually associated with Italian composers and predates Ponchielli's documented introduction to the music of Richard Wagner in 1876\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eInitially, I thought that many of Ponchielli's funeral marches exhibited a familiarity with Beethoven's music, particularly with regard to the substitution of the lowered submediant as an alternative to the dominant as a related key. When Ponchielli's band setting of Beethoven's Op. 26 funeral march was discovered, there was a sense of self-justification. While recent presentations (and a new article for the online Grove) by Professor Licia Sirch of the Milan Conservatory have revealed the pedagogical changes made at that institution in compositional exercises, a familiarity with both Bach and Beethoven as studio repertoire in the keyboard area remains undocumented.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAmong the entire Cremona band music production, the number of original works for band are very few if one removes the brass concertos, dances, and the marches.\u003cbr\u003eBeyond the two sets of variations, only this work and the two Fantasias stand the test of originality. The problems associated with works intended originally for the wind band extends to today, for reasons that have more to do with the vagaries of human nature and the remaining secondary status of the wind band. Mozart, Mendelssohn, Richard Struass, and Wagner all composed works for only winds. Even in the band world such works are more likely to be honored by their absence from programs in spite of their being often cited in arguments for such a repertoire. This work carries with it also the demands of exceptional virtuosity that all but ensures its likelihood of being rarely performed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA further concern is that Ponchielli had developed over the course of ten years a technology for dealing with the realities of outdoor, unamplified music performances. As yet there is no contemporary report of the atmosphere at these concerts as regarding the number in the audience, the position of the band, whether an elevated stage was used (there are proposal plans in the archives), and many other considerations. Suffice it to say, The band of 1872 was Ponchielli's \"ideal,\" which he had been working toward since he arrived in Piacenza in August, 1860. The combination of a 12-14-member clarinet section with a group of 14-16 conical brass, 7 cylindrical brass, and 2-3 percussion provided a robust yet limited timbre palette for his work. At that time, an Asura named Rahu slipped in and stole and drank the amrita. The sun god and moon god noticed this and informed Vishnu, the supreme god. Vishnu, enraged, threw a disk weapon called chakram and severed Rahu's head, but Rahu's head, immortalized by amrita, soared to the heavens alive. The head then resented the sun and moon gods who had told it off, and chased it around and swallowed it, causing eclipses of the sun and moon. But alas, because it has no body below the neck, both the sun and the moon it swallows quickly slip through its neck.
